The Nonconformist
Stargirl is not a follower. In fact, she's an example of a nonconformist, someone who doesn't follow the same rules or customs as most people. In Stargirl's case, she doesn't follow the "rules" and customs of the popular kids at school. This has made most of the students turn against her. Stargirl does not have many friends. Would you befriend Stargirl if you went to school with her? Why or why not?

The Elusive Stargirl.....
Our first read-aloud this year is Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli. Stargirl is a puzzle so far. One interesting thing about this character is that she changes her name. Stargirl was once "Mudpie" and before that she was "Pocket Mouse." What if everyone changed their names to suit their feelings or interests. What name would YOU choose? Why?!

SUMMER READING BLAST!

Let's chat about summer reading. Research shows that kids who don't read during the sumer lose ground. Make sure that doesn't happen to you by reading...even fifteen minutes a day will help prevent the "summer slide." So get to it! What are your reading right now? Have you found a great book that other kids might like? Let's chat! (Remember- first names only!)

Frobscottle and Trogglehumpers
Do you know what "frobscottle" is?? Of course not, but you will once you read The BFG by Roald Dahl. Frobscottle is a "scrumdiddlyumptious" drink found only in giant-land. The BFG is filled with Mr. Dahl's wacky, invented words. Luckily there are some spelling rules that can help readers decode these words. Check out these new "words" created by Room 5's "dogglewizzes!"
